One of the most relevant questions when travelling is accommodation. Everyone wants to find a place with the perfect quality-price ratio. We want to help you as much as possible!
Hotels, the traditional choice
Staying in a hotel is a traditional decision, often a guarantee of comfort and reliability. There are many hotels in Lithuania for all budgets and needs. Compared to Western Europe, accommodation in Lithuania is cheaper but might be more expensive compared to some other Eastern European countries.
Larger cities, such as Vilnius, Kaunas and Klaipėda, offer the most accommodation options. Accommodation in the big cities ranges from the most luxurious five-star hotels like Kempinski to cheap hostels with a bunk bed in a 10 bed room.
It is also quite easy to find accommodation in resort towns, such as Nida, Palanga, Šventoji and Druskininkai, as tourism is a big part of their income. It might be a bit harder to find a suitable place in smaller towns as they are not used to receiving many tourists. Some other accommodation choices are motels along the roads or renting out flats for a few months.
Camping for the more adventurous
But perhaps you are more of a nature lover? Then camping might be the best accommodation for you, especially if you are travelling in summer! Lithuania has beautiful nature, many forests, green fields and rivers. It is also not very dense in population so you can certainly find a calm corner for yourself. Camping also offers you easy access to many enjoyable activities: hiking, swimming, kayaking, canoeing, fishing, yachting, perhaps even riding.
Campsites in Lithuania might be a bit scarcer compared to European standard but there are definitely some beside every larger city, like Vilnius, Kaunas, Klaipėda, Šiauliai or Panevėžys. This way, you are very close to the city and can experience their attractions during the day but retreat to your calm, rural camp in the evening. However, if you are looking for a way to get as far away from civilization as possible, there are many campsites surrounded by nature and nature only. There are campsites by the sea, by rivers, even one on an island, called the Apple Island (Obuolių sala)!
The many attractions of rural tourism
Finally, you can stay in rural tourism homesteads and farmsteads which range from a few moderately sized buildings to the fanciest villas. They are all located further from the cities but might offer even more attractions. This way of tourism is quite popular in Lithuania and certainly special.
There are many types of rural tourism and many ways to experience it. Are you a fan of history and culture? Some of the rural tourism homesteads are focused exactly on that. They allow you to live just like Lithuanians used to live in older times, eat just like they used to eat, observe old tools and maybe even take part in recreations of the old crafts, like bread baking.
Perhaps you enjoy sauna very much? A large number of rural tourism spots offers the possibility to experience special Lithuanian bathhouse traditions. Sauna culture has always been important in Lithuania. Lithuanians use steam saunas which are not too hot but really moist as steam is created by regularly pouring water over hot stones. Lithuanians use many herbs in saunas and there is the special procedure of lightly slapping each other with herbs, a kind of massage. Healing mud is also often used. Often, you can book the whole sauna experience with a bath master that will help you enjoy Lithuanian sauna to the fullest.
Finally, many rural tourism homesteads are located by rivers and lakes and offer many active activities, such as kayaking, canoeing, fishing etc. Some farmsteads really let you feel like you are on a farm. They have goats, bunnies, sheep, hens and more. Although not native to Lithuania, llamas and alpacas are getting increasingly popular too!
